Muse had one hell of a Naughties. They put out four really good albums, spanning the whole decade. I had the pleasure of seeing them live at both the beginning and end of the decade; first at UMD and 9:30 Club in 2003-ish, and most recently at Fedex Field, opening for U2 a few months ago. (BTW, I think it’s ridiculous that Muse opened for U2. U2 is not even good enough to open for Muse, let alone headline over them. But U2 will always draw stadiumsful of Gen Xers who want an excuse to wear sunglasses at night.) To top off all their success, they can count Glenn Beck as one of their numerous fans. Matthew Bellamy is simply a freak of nature. Song-writing, singing, guitar, and piano are all things he kicks ass at. There’s a little something for everyone in the Muse catalog: excerpts from classical pieces (‘I Belong to You”), R&B-style string-plucking beats (“Undisclosed Desires”), unabashedly untrendy hard rock (“Stockholm Syndrome”), fuzzy-bouncy-power-pop-rock, and even some synth-loop-heavy-new-wavy-dance stuff (“Map Of The Problematique”). Anyway, without further ado, the 15 best Muse tracks of the Naughties:
